Who used to live in this little upper room of a flat in Preston? This is where a depressed and discouraged young Elder received the letter from his father saying, 'I have only one suggestion: forget yourself and go to work'.
This is the River Ribble, where the first Saints outside the United States were baptised. We actually crossed the footbridge (rebuilt since then) where George Watt ran across to be the first one baptized!
Most of these historical sites are in Avenham Park (longA, said like Avunum). I had to laugh at signs of our times...Sis Leece said these beautiful manhole covers stood for 'Prince of Peace'. But the city officials have now changed them to stand for 'Preston Pride'. *sigh*
Elder Meese is standing by two markers commemorating the first LDS members here. The tree he's by is called the 'missionary oak'. It was planted by the YM/YW of the Leeds Stake in 1987 to honor the 20,000 + missionaries who have served in England since 1837. The close up on this marker is for my friend, Diana Rollins, who is a direct descendent of George Watt, the first person baptized.
Pres. Leece by the same marker. It's all in a really lovely Japanese garden inside the park. Why there? Just a pretty spot for it, I guess.
Not too far from the park is a street with this boarded up building. It's where Heber C. Kimball and his associates encountered the evil spirits, white building - third floor, just prior to the day of the first baptisms into the Church. It's just sitting there vacant.
I also have a wonderful half-minute of Sis. Leece telling about the first baptisms in the River Ribble. Unfortunately, it would take forever to download it onto this blog (we don't have the speediest internet connection here). So I will close with one more plaque in the hallway of our Preston Chapel. It contains a brick from the Vauxhall Chapel where the missionaries first preached the Gospel in England!
Oh my goodness. So much wonderful history there, AND YOU'RE A PART OF IT! These will be times to remember forever. So glad you're documenting in word and picture.
